Workforce Development Program

NCCHCA plays an active role in ensuring that North Carolina’s Community Health Centers are equipped with the clinical and administrative staff they need to continue to fulfill their commitment of providing access to quality, comprehensive primary care services.

Medical Providers

NCCHCA continues to seek opportunities to collaborate with North Carolina’s universities as they train primary care providers, mid-level practitioners, behavioral health specialists, dentists, and pharmacists. As more health centers commit to train students, they are exposed to the community health center model of care and the benefits of this systematic approach to ensuring access. NCCHCA is also placing a special emphasis on ensuring that health centers have strong recruitment and retention practices for providers.

Administrative Staff

NCCHCA estimates that by 2016, there will be a significant shortage of senior leaders needed to meet the demand resulting from expansion efforts through the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Given these projections, there is a considerable need to train public health professionals in the specific areas pertinent to community health center operations and leadership. NCCHCA is also devoted to finding partnerships and support for developing administrative, mid-level managers, and senior leaders.

Providing access to quality, affordable primary care is the foundation of the Community Health Center program.  In order to continue with the mission this mission, CHCs must have adequate, appropriate and competent clinical and administrative staff.

Here are a few resources that will help you learn more about workforce development in community health.

North Carolina Office Rural Health and Community Care (NC-ORHCC) – NC-ORHCC provides recruitment services for medical, dental and psychiatric staff through 3 programs:  National Health Service Corps, State Loan Repayment, and High Needs Service Bonus.  They also have information on community profiles for providers that wants to get a better understanding of a community they are considering.  There is no placement fee for these services. 

 National Health Service Corps (NHSC) – NHSC, funded through the Health Resources and Services Administration, ensures that underserved areas receive the medical, dental, and mental health providers they need.  Clinicians can receive loan repayment or scholarships if they commit to practicing in a Health Professional Shortage Area.  Over 30,000 clinicians have served in the NHSC.  

North Carolina SEARCH Program – SEARCH (Student Experiences and Rotations in Community Health) gives students and residents the opportunity to rotate through community health organizations and serve on multidisciplinary teams.  This program provides great exposure to the community health model of care, particularly those in underserved areas. 

 NC Medical Society Foundation: Community Practitioner Program – This program supports physicians, physician assistants, and family nurse practitioners as they provide services for rural, underserved, and uninsured populations all across the state.  Providers receive financial assistance, practice management assistance and other incentives.

 ECU Certificate Program in Community Health Center Management – This Graduate Certificate program is offered by ECU’s Department of Public Health and Department of Health Services Administration Management and is designed to prepare individuals to administer, lead, and develop community health centers.  The curriculum consists of 5 courses, and offers the option for face-to-face or distance learning education.   UNC-Chapel Hill’s Management Academy for Public Health – Through the Gillings School of Global Public Health and the Kenan-Flagler Business School, public health professionals serve of teams of 3-6 individuals, and are taught management principles to help deal with the challenges in public health.  Each team is required to create a business plan that addresses a key public health problem in their community.  

UNC-Chapel Hill’s Management Academy for Public Health – Through the Gillings School of Global Public Health and the Kenan-Flagler Business School, public health professionals serve of teams of 3-6 individuals, and are taught management principles to help deal with the challenges in public health.  Each team is required to create a business plan that addresses a key public health problem in their community.
