Position: Dental Assistant
Location: AppHealthCare Dental Center (primary location); community sites (as scheduled)

Work hours: Full time with a 4 day workweek M-Th 7:00am-5:30pm
Starting Salary: Based on education and experience

Primary Purpose of Position: The primary purpose of this position is to provide general dentistry assisting for preventive care and treatment; policy development for public health dental issues; public health education/promotion of dental topics; and to help with access to dental treatment. Primary focus of work will be assisting to provide preventive and restorative dental services
within the Alleghany and Ashe County area in our Ashe Dental Center location in Jefferson, NC in addition to providing portable dental clinic services in area schools and community sites. The selected candidate will report directly to the Dental Director as part of the dental team.

Job Requirements: Chair side dental assisting with standard assignments as well as radiological functions. Cleans and sterilizes instruments and prepares and arranges instrument trays. Keep instruments and equipment in operable condition. Explain procedures and provides support to patients, as well as, monitoring the patient’s behavior and vital signs upon request from the dentist. Inventories, receives, checks and stocks supplies and equipment. Complete patient’s records for operative procedures, charges, and re-appointments. Maintain records and recall system and answer the phone. This position also works closely with the central billing and central medical staff to meet client and agency needs. Travel is required to AppHealthCare sites including health departments within the three-county district, local schools in the region and community locations using the portable dental clinic equipment and truck.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Considerable knowledge of dental equipment, instruments and procedures; considerable knowledge of preparation methods and dental materials. Ability to maintain records, inventories, and patient histories. Requires close visual perception and manual dexterity for patient contact and recordkeeping. Standing and/or walking for extended periods of time, as well as stooping, bending and reaching required. Ability to lift 10-25 pounds required. In addition, ability to push and pull mobile dental equipment in and out of community locations required. Ability to communicate clearly and to deal effectively with changing
situations and stress required. Must be able to follow instructions and directions with varying workloads and be detail oriented. Must be able to work well under pressure and be able to deal with patients, co-workers and the public in a courteous and cooperative manner. Experience working with Dentrix or another electronic dental health record system preferred.

Minimum Education and Experience: Completion of a dental assistant program from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of on-the-job training as a dental assistant. Alternately, an equivalent combination of education and experience including required x-ray, medical office emergency, and coronal polish training.

Requirements: A valid driver’s license required, and successfully complete a pre-employment drug screening and background check. In addition, required documentation of clinical competencies must be submitted to request clinical privileges. A positive, friendly, energetic, team oriented, goal-driven assistant is sought to fill this critical position.
