Job Description:

Summary

The Medical Assistant (MA) Clinical Preceptor responsibilities will include student orientation, liaison with the participating health center (training site), student supervision, and clinical teaching to provide hands-on training, ensuring that they gain the knowledge and skills required for entry-level employment in the medical assistant field. The MA Clinical Preceptor is also responsible for sound educational practices and the development of each student’s academic development in the clinic setting. The MA Clinical Preceptor will also manage the health center training environment to promote a positive and engaging learning experience and provide support, tutoring, and other assistance as needed. The MA Clinical Preceptor is expected to “model” the professional behaviors, language, and activities expected of our students.

  • Must have skills, knowledge, experience, and education in the healthcare field
  • Must possess adaptable approaches and possess the qualities to engage adult learners
  • Ability to interact effectively with students and members of NCCHCA.
  • Must have ability to interact effectively and courteously with culturally diverse groups.
  • Ability to communicate only the facts to students or to decline to reveal information.
  • Ability to project a professional, friendly, and helpful demeanor.
  • The ability to communicate well in professional settings is required; excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Must have the ability to work a flexible schedule to include day and evening hours on occasions

Minimum Qualifications (Degrees/Certificates)

  • Certified Medical Assistant or LPN degree, licensed in North Carolina15
  • Medical Assistant Certification with demonstrated competency in teaching field
  • Five (5) years of related occupational experience
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with multi-cultural populations that support diversity, cultural understanding and inclusion is preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Instructing — Teaching others how to do something
  • Learning Strategies — Selecting and using training/instructional methods and procedures appropriate for the situation when learning or teaching new things
  • Talking to others to convey information effectively
  • Must be very detailed oriented and be able to meet set deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and lead teams
  • Experience in ambulatory care
  • Detail oriented with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Competence in Microsoft Office applications particularly Word and Excel.
  • Must have access to an automobile, valid driver’s license, with appropriate liability insurance
  • Ability to travel out-of-town and overnight as needed

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • None

Essential Functions

  • Participate in a preceptor orientation.
  • Coordinates and instructs assigned students hands-on training at the locations and times designated
  • Teach specified hands-on training (s) in the medical assistant curriculum for students’ comprehension assigned by the Work-Based Learning and Apprenticeship Director. This entails having a strong understanding of the topics to be taught, and preparing trainings in accordance with the course curriculum
  • Guide, facilitate, supervise, and monitor the student in achieving clinical objectives. Supervise the student’s performance of skills and other MA activities to assure safe practice
  • Go through the assigned curriculum and make useful suggestions to the students on possible ways to improve on them to compliment students’ didactic learning
  • Keep track of students’ clinical performances and create effective means of rewarding excelling students, while encouraging those not doing so well, by working with them to improve their academic and/or clinical performances in conjunction with the Work-Based Learning and Apprenticeship Director
  • Personally supervise clinical activities of students to ensure they are doing well, and to put them through where they are experiencing difficulties
  • Collaborate with the Work-Based Learning and Apprenticeship Director to review the progress of the students toward meeting clinical learning objectives
  • Ensure that each student has been presented with the material to successfully meet the clinical learning objectives of each course
  • Provide direct feedback to the student regarding clinical performance.
  • Supports learning objectives and acquisition of skill competencies to assess students’ professional proficiency
  • Collaborate with the student and health center clinical lead to formulate a clinical schedule
  • Supervise all patient teaching and interactions

Physical Demands

  • This position requires frequent sitting, standing or walking for long periods of time, operation of standard office machines and mobile devices, and a working knowledge of computer hardware and software. May require lifting of up to 25 pounds. Requires hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity. Requires normal vision range. Must be able to routinely work in the evenings and occasionally on weekends, as needed.

Work Environment

  • Typical office environment with travel around the state
  • Occasional out-of-state travel
