LOCATION: District Employee: work will primarily be located in Watauga County but will routinely travel throughout the District (Ashe, Alleghany, Watauga) counties, as work priorities demand.
HOURS: 40 hours per week between the hours of 7:00 am and 6:00 pm, with normal clinic hours of 8:00 am to 4:45 pm, Monday-Friday. Occasional early morning or evening hours required. Occasional work may be required after hours or on weekends for events scheduled in advance, extended special hours, or in response to a public health emergency.
SALARY: Grade 58
Salary Range: $25,308-41,364

DESCRIPTION: This position serves as a clinical medical office assistant at the Watauga County office of AppHealthCare. This position will fill a critical role by providing support in AppHealthCare’s clinical service programs. The selected employee will report to the Medical Laboratory Supervisor. The employee will verify patient information by interviewing the patient, recording medical history, and confirming purpose of visit. Prepare patients for examination by performing vital signs, height, weight, vision and hearing screenings; assist nurses and physicians in clinic with standard assignments such as: patient interviews, form preparation, data
entry, patient exams, specimen collection and standard care procedures. Perform laboratory functions such as waived and moderately complex testing, finger sticks and venipuncture; prepare specimens for microscopic viewing and/or transport to outside lab. Maintain and monitor Quality Control manual and reference lab logs. The employee will participate in the Quality Assurance Program, i.e. continuing education, proficiency testing, preventative maintenance of equipment, etc. under the supervision of the medical laboratory supervisor. In addition, the employee will assist in ordering and maintaining stock of clinic and lab supplies, verifying receipt, and responsible for assuring supplies are organized and readily available. The employee’s responsibility will also include keeping the patient waiting area, exam rooms and assigned work areas neat and clean Additional duties may include assistance to clerical and/or clinical staff consisting of follow up calls to patients and data entry.

RECRUITMENT STANDARDS
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
 Knowledge of the principles and practices of patient care and techniques of infection control.
 Knowledge of common health and safety precautions while working in local health departments or clinical practice settings.
 Ability to work with staff and patients, under supervision, as set up by departmental policies.
 Ability to maintain patient records by documenting patient examination, medications, history, treatment and lab results
accurately.
 Ability to maintain patient confidence, use sound judgment and empathy in relation with patients.
 Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
 Ability to adhere to professional standards, policies, and procedures set forth by state and local requirements.
 Ability to demonstrate competency in clinical skills required.

Additional requirements: Applicant must have a comfortable working knowledge of computer use and have basic email skills. Excellent verbal communication skills are essential for this position in interacting with clients, coworkers, and other community stakeholders. This position will require a high energy employee who is willing to prioritize customer service, clinic efficiency, and can deliver culturally sensitive quality care in their daily work.

Other Requirements: Due to the nature of this position, a dependable vehicle and valid driver’s license is required for regular travel within the District and other state required meetings as assigned.

Minimum Training and Education: High school or General Educational Development diploma, completion of a one-year formal training course in medical office assisting at a community college or technical institute; or High school or General Educational Development diploma and a combination of one year of clerical and health/dental related experience; or an equivalent
combination of education and experience. Certified Medical Office Assistant or Certified Nursing Assistant preferred and prefer fluency in Spanish language.
