JOB TITLE: Dental Hygienist (Temp to Perm)

POSITION PURPOSE:
Promotes dental health by completing dental prophylaxis; providing oral cancer screening and radiographic studies; charting conditions of decay and disease; performing procedures in compliance with the dental practice act. Position will participate in QI activities as needed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Prepares treatment room for patient by adhering to prescribed procedures and protocols.
• Prepares patient for dental hygiene treatment by welcoming, soothing, seating, and draping patient.
• Provides information to patients and employees by answering questions and requests.
• Maintains instrumentation for dental hygiene treatment by sharpening, sterilizing, and selecting instruments.
• Selects materials and equipment for dental hygiene visit by evaluating patient’s oral health.
• Completes dental prophylaxis by cleaning deposits and stains from teeth and from beneath gum margins.
• Detects disease by completing oral cancer screening; feeling and visually examining gums; using probes to locate periodontal disease and to assess levels of recession; exposing and developing radiographic studies.
• Apply fluoride and other preventive agents.
• Helps dentist manage dental and medical emergencies by maintaining CPR certification, emergency drugs and oxygen supply, and directory of emergency numbers.
• Educates patients by giving oral hygiene and plaque control instructions and postoperative instructions; providing in reminders of time of next dental hygiene visit.
• Documents dental hygiene services by recording vital signs and medical dental histories; charting in patient records.
• Maintains patient confidence and protects operations by keeping information confidential.
• Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
• Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols.
• Ensures operation of dental equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer’s instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniques.
• Maintains dental supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies.
• Conserves dental resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results.
• Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
• Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
• Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION: Associate of Science in Dental Hygiene or Certificate in Dental Hygiene. Registered Dental Hygienist required.
SKILLS/ABILITIES: Individual must possess knowledge of and the ability to use basic dental office equipment and instrumentation. Knowledge of current sterilization and infection control procedures. Must possess current CPR certification. Must be able to communicate effectively with patients and work in a team environment.

DENTAL HYGIENIST

POSITION SUMMARY:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Considerable knowledge of standard practices and procedures in a dental clinic required. Ability to communicate effectively with patients, dentist, staff and community groups required. The ability to understand technical and medical terminology as they relate to dentistry and ability to teach preventive dental education required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from an accredited Dental Hygiene program required. Special requirements: licensed to practice in the State of North Carolina. Two (2) years’ experience preferred.

JOB SUMMARY
The Staff Dentist is responsible for providing quality dental care to adult and pediatric patients
and to supervise all dental staff.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Reasonable

Patient Care
 Provides diagnostic and therapeutic dental services to all patients;
 Reviews medical histories reviewed at every visit.
 Ensures all pathologic conditions are charted within 72 hours and reported to
the patient.
 Develops and reviews written treatment plans for patients.
 Obtains informed consent from patients prior to initiating any treatment.
 Provides specialist referrals to patients, if necessary.
 Enters and signs all treatment provided in the EMR.
 Meets clinical standards of practice.
Supervision of Dental Support Staff.
 Hires, trains, evaluates, counsels and supervises the day-to-day activities of designated
dental support staff.
 Instructs assigned dental assistants in chair-side, laboratory, sterilization and
radiology procedures.
 Oversees maintenance and cleanliness of dental operation.
 Delegates expanded duties in accordance with skills of dental auxiliary and
within limits of state law.
Patient education
 Assures integration of patient education into all treatment phases.
 Discusses home care status and techniques with patients who demonstrate
sub-optimal plaque control.
 Incorporates parent into education regime for every child less than 10 years
old (if possible).
 Explains the importance of maintaining appointments to every patient.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
 Full licensure to practice dentistry in the State of North Carolina
 Dental degree from an accredited institution.
 Strong community health/public health orientation, experienced in patient care management,
and possessing all of the qualifications of a staff dentist.
 Equivalent combination of experience/education/certification.
PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge:
 Understanding of the healthcare environment, including HRSA FQHC compliance
regulations.
 General knowledge of finance, revenue cycle, marketing, and operations standards in dental
care.
 Knowledge of regulatory compliance i.e., HIPPA, OSHA, etc.
 Basic understanding of information technology and ability to organize, analyze and
synthesize complex data from various sources.
Skills:

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
 Seeing: Must be able to read head written and printed material, as well as use computer, fax
machine, Xerox machine and other medical equipment in accordance with specialty.
 Hearing: Must be able to hear well enough to communicate with coworkers and others. Good
hearing is necessary to receive detailed information through oral communication and to make
fine discriminations in sound.
 Sitting: Must be able to sit for the majority of the work shift while answering telephone and
communicating with others.
 Standing/Walking/Mobility: Must be able to stand intermittently and be capable of walking on
hardwood and linoleum floors with concrete underpayments. Must be able to walk between
various clinical areas and departments.
 Fingering/Grasping/Feeling: This position requires manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand
coordination for easy and skillful use of hands when working with and performing normal
duties and responsibilities.

JOB SUMMARY

Staff Dentist works with the Lead Dental Provider in the supervision of staff and patient care. Participates as a member of the Patient Centered Health Home (PCHH) Care Team.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
• Assist Lead Dental Provider in supervision of all dental staff and in administration of dental department.
• In absence of the Lead Dental Provider, represents dental department at board and department head meetings and other clinic related functions.
• Complete all requirements to maintain a state Dental license that is current and in good standings.
• Provide dental in service training to dental and other staff as appropriate.
• Responsible for maintaining accurate and legible dental patient records.
• Provide dental diagnostic and treatment services to patients and staff .
• Implement state and federal laws, standards, and guidelines related to dental services.
• Represent the health center to dental societies and other community and civic groups.
• Precept dental students rotating through the health center from UNC Dental School.
• Participate in continuing education seminars on- and off-site as appropriate and feasible to
enhance dental program.
• Participates in case reviews during PCHH huddles:

• Other duties as assigned

Examine, diagnose, and treat diseases, injuries, and malformations of teeth and gums. May treat diseases of nerve, pulp, and other dental tissues affecting oral hygiene and retention of teeth. May fit dental appliances or provide preventive care.
Must be licensed to practice in North Carolina.
